Beyond the Horizon
Remembering Zulya on her birthday
A benefit concert
Friends and collaborators of acclaimed Tatar-Australian artist Zulya Kamalova will come together for a very special event to mark her birthday following her untimely death in 2024. Zulya was renowned within Australia and internationally as the frontwoman of ARIA award winning band Zulya and the Children of the Underground, and for a range of collaborations and projects which extended to cross cultural explorations, theatre and opera. Zulya’s songwriting and vocals were grounded in her Tatar Australian identity, but also informed by jazz, cabaret and traditional musics of the world.
In a career spanning more than two decades, Zulya recorded ten albums, both in solo ventures and with Children of the Underground, toured and won audiences throughout Australia and Europe, was awarded six music awards within Australia and was made an Honoured Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan. Zulya straddled the divide of cultural and mainstream effortlessly, weaving new narratives for contemporary music. As a performer she was both dynamic and spellbinding, and her soaring, often haunting vocals captivated audiences and peers alike.
This special event will feature a huge lineup of artists who were either close collaborators of Zulya’s, or were close to her heart. All funds raised will be donated to Melbourne City Mission, who provided vital assistance with compassion to Zulya at the end of her life.
Lineup: The Children of the Underground, Mal Webb & Kylie Morrigan, The Wikimen, The Music Between feat. Ria Soemardjo, Rosa Voto, Misagh Zamani, Vinod Prasanna, Eamon McNelis's Big Idiot Club, Gamelan DanAnda, Floyd Thursby, Langue de Chat, Bonnie Smith (Reflejos, Queen of Hearts), GRUMPY, and more.
Kitchen open for lunch or snacks.
