SIMA × The Vanguard presents: In Residence with Escape Squares

A collaboration between SIMA and The Vanguard, ‘In Residence’ highlights the sound of Sydney music by presenting some of the city’s most distinctive creative voices in performance over the course of a month. Across weekly shows audiences are allowed to witness the construction, development and refinement of a musical conversation between some of the Sydney’s most iconoclastic artists.  

For the inaugural ‘In Residence’, we are thrilled to present ‘Escape Squares’. Escape Squares is the brainchild of Harry Sutherland -  one of Australia’s most celebrated musicians across a range of settings, from musical director or collaborator with Matt Corby, Ian Moss or Meg Mac, to critically lauded jazz pianist and co-leader of the ‘Symphonette’ project.  

Escape Squares offers a sound shaped by the lush arrangements of Gil Evans, Arthur Verocai, Herbie Hancock, and Judy Bailey. Begun as a suite of Mellotron demos recorded on a Tascam 4-track cassette, the project has seen a number of realisations including expansion to a nine piece ensemble. Here, joined by Brendan Clark on Höfner bass and Tully Ryan on drums, the trio will investigate a new trio setting for this unique and rich music.

Dangerous  behaviour including Crowd Surfing, Stage Diving, Moshing and Violent Dancing is not allowed and will result in your immediate removal from  this venue. Inappropriate behaviour at this venue will lead to your banning.
