Larry Gurruwiwi is a force of nature, channeling the sacred sound of the Westwind, he will literally blow you away. Acknowledged as the greatest traditional Yidaki virtuoso aka didjeridoo player in the world, it’s a role he inherited from his late father the legendary Galpu Clan leader, Mr D Gurruwiwi. Soaring across the world Larry continues his father’s legacy working with his brothers, nephews and extended family under the name of “Malawurr,” which is the Galpu name for “Family”.
The band toured Europe in 2019 and have played at festivals such as Womadelaide, Womad Bristol, Darwin Festival, Reve Delaborigene and Splendour In The Grass, most recently the band played to huge adoring crowds at Yabun festival in Sydney featuring a dynamic collaboration with Afro Moses. Always looking to connect with other cultures and share the songlines, Larry has collaborated with artists such as Gotye, DRMNG NOW, Abdi Karaya, Monkey Marc and MC Rayjah. Larry is spreading the healing sounds of the Morning Star songline. He and his family intend to heal not only the international music community but also the next generations of younger musicians back home on the Gove Peninsula in North East Arnhem Land , Australia.
Larry and Malawurr have audiences dancing around the world to their unique blend of traditional songlines infused with modern dance/dub production and uptempo reggae instrumentation.
With haunting songs in language about connection to land and spirit, Larry spreads his ancient culture in an accessible mode that opens a portal to the profound frequencies of nature.
